Facebooks attempt to create Artificial Intelligence bots

About a year ago Facebook announced that they were working on an Artificial Intelligence chat bot with its sole purpose to negotiate with humans, have a conversation and eventually try to sell you a product of some sorts.

Even though a lot of people in this field are constantly saying to be very careful and take certain precautions, Facebook and especially Mark Zuckerberg though this was a great step.

Mark poses the idea that all this people that are talking about Artificial Intelligence in the same context as this doomsday scenarios are irresponsible and even negative people. He also said that in the next 5 years AI will change the way we leave in a very big way and we should all contribute to that.

I can agree upon the fact that AI will change the way we leave and I think I said that in the article I wrote explaining what is artificial intelligence, but to go out and say that people like Elon Musk who was the main rival of Zuckerberg and maybe the only one that tried to tell Mark not to go through with this project, that they are irresponsible, its not a great way to look at a situation.

What happened?

While they were developing the AI bots, one of the scientists involved in the project posed the idea to take two of these bots and let them talk to each other, and so they did.

The AI bots had been instructed to work out how to negotiate between themselves, and improve their bartering as they went along. But they were not told to use comprehensible English.

The outcome will kind of frighten you but in a very short period of the bots chatting the engineers started to see a weird pattern in the language that they where using, a pattern that to a human made no sense.

The bots codenamed Alice and Bob had created their own language:

Bob: i can i i everything else . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Alice: balls have zero to me to me to me to me to me to me to me to me to
Bob: you i everything else . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Alice: balls have a ball to me to me to me to me to me to me to me
Bob: i i can i i i everything else . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Alice: balls have a ball to me to me to me to me to me to me to me
Bob: i . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Alice: balls have zero to me to me to me to me to me to me to me to me to
Bob: you i i i i i everything else . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Alice: balls have 0 to me to me to me to me to me to me to me to me to
Bob: you i i i everything else . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Alice: balls have zero to me to me to me to me to me to me to me to me to

Its clear that to a human the above conversation makes no sense, but it’s evident that they did understand each other.

The company shut down the chats bots and abandoned the project because quote “our interests was the bots to be able to talk to humans”.

Final Thoughts

I am not certain what to take from this whole scenario, but once again its is very clear that AI is something that we should be very careful when it comes to developing it.

Google has made a very clear step ahead with the creation of the AutoML, sort for automaded machine learning witch is a version of Artificial Intelligence, more on this subject on a later article.
